Facts to counter left and right.
Over the course of my adulthood Lewis Black has identified the stupidity of whichever power is currently holding office; both as a stand-up comic and as a guest on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
“There has to come a point, where Democrats and Republicans, where we see a piece of footage, and we just agree, on what the f**k reality is.” Lewis said during his HBO Special Red, White and Screwed.
People failing to recognize positive in opposing parties while failing to recognize significant flaws in their own party irritate the hell out of me and demonstrate intellectual bankruptcy.
Congress established the Post Office in 1775, after 234 years they are running a budget deficit of $7 billion in 2009. A guest of Bill Maher defended the Post Office and said he did not see how FedEx or UPS could get a letter from one coast to the other for 42 cents. This was unforgivably stupid and Maher should have stated the Post Office cannot pull it off for 42 cents either, but Maher is a liberal so he agreed.
Social Security was established in 1935, Medicare and Medicaid in 1965. Forbes magazine estimated their unfunded liabilities, meaning obligated payments to beneficiaries that taxes will not cover, at $107 trillion. These are the two best examples of exactly what is going to happen if the government becomes involved in health care.
Folks, this means there will not be enough tax dollars coming from the working population of the entire nation to pay for those receiving benefits. From whence are these funds going to come? No one in power will even discuss the necessary changes to these programs right now for fear of angering the baby boomers, who vote en masse. Life expectancy has climbed approximately 15 years since the inception of Social Security, the only way to prevent an utter collapse later is to move back the age of entitlement now.
Fannie Mae was established in 1938, Freddie Mac in 1970. They are both broke. Both played significant roles in the housing collapse that started in 2007.
The War on Drugs started in 1968. Billions of dollars spent annually for 40 years without making a dent in the recreational drug trafficking, manufacture or consumption in America. You probably know more people who smoke weed than work for the government.
AMTRAK was subsidized in 1970. For years it has operated running a budget deficit.
The Republican-supported $787 billion bailout of 2008 has yet to create a single new private-sector job.
Not to be outdone in a contest to out-stupid the Republicans, Democrats authorized Cash for Clunkers. This turd-in-the-punchbowl cost the government $24,000 for every $8,000 giveaway and largely stimulated the Japanese auto industry while requiring the destruction of perfectly useful vehicles.
Which party was responsible for these demonstrations of terminal stupidity? If you hope to blame it all on Bush, Reagan or even Rush Limbaugh Republicans, you seek to deny the other party’s role.
Both Republicans and Democrats had their hand in decimating the Constitution, the federal government and the future of the nation.
The realities for all of us require calm, intellectual reflection and admitting failure. If you honestly believe the federal government is going to provide a positive change to health care in America, I have only two questions for you. On what do you base this belief? Which federal program do you use as your example of imminent success?
Who said, “The fiscal policies of this administration and its allies in Congress will add more than $600 Billion in debt for each of the next 5 years…
[I]t took 42 Presidents 224 years to run up only $1 trillion of foreign-held debt. This administration did more than that in just 1 year. …
Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”
Rush? Glenn Beck? Ron Paul? Ronald Reagan? It was then-Sen. Barack Obama voting against an increase in the deficit.
I find irony in the left’s mocking of those on the evangelical right who place faith in an unseen deity, but these same doubters believe the federal government will provide for everyone despite the actual and conclusive evidence to the contrary.
People, trusting your individual liberties and the welfare of the future to people like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank, Barack Obama, John McCain or any other major name in Washington is like trusting a pimp to raise your daughter.
I see unforgivable flaws in both major parties, so keep the change folks. Liberty wins over government every time in my book.
